A miscarriage is defined as losing the pregnancy before 20 weeks of pregnancy. Most of the pregnancies which are lost in the first trimester, are because of some abnormalities in the growing embryo. For the pregnant woman it may be hard to accept. She usually wonders about the cause and blames herself for the miscarriage.Almost one in 4 pregnancies are lost in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. Patient may suddenly develop crampy abdominal pain with fresh bleeding. She may see clots and pieces passing out from her vagina. As she passes out all the tissues, her crampy pain and bleeding stops. The condition is complete abortion. Sometimes, she may pass out the products of conception partially and may continue to bleed. This condition is termed as incomplete abortion; in that case, she has to see her doctor. If the doctor confirms the diagnosis, he will advise the patient to undergo evacuation of uterus to remove the left over pieces.
After a miscarriage, women wants to know the chances of having another miscarriage. The chances of having another miscarriage is almost the same as that of the first miscarriage. The chances of future successful pregnancies are good. If the woman keeps on having more than 3 miscarriages than the doctor does investigations to find out the reason and treats the problems accordingly.
