A cesarean section is delivery of the baby through the incision (cut) made in the mother’s abdomen (belly) and her womb. Cesarean delivery is done for many reasons. The operation is scheduled either on an elective (planned) basis or on an emergency basis (unplanned).
Planned cesarean section is done for multiple pregnancy abnormalities or presentation of the baby such as, the baby is lying crocked in the womb or it’s buttocks are presenting at the mouth of the womb, or there are more than one baby (twin pregnancy), or abnormal location of the placenta such as placenta previa where the placenta is present at the mouth of the womb, or the patient request for a cesarean section.
Unplanned or emergency cesarean is done for the problems arised during the labor. Some of the reasons are: the labor may be slow, baby becomes distressed, sudden bleeding due to the abnormal placental location or the placenta separates even before the delivery of the baby, or the baby is too big that it cannot negotiate through the birth canal.
Women are given a spinal or general anesthesia and the operation is carried out. If the Cesarean is done under spinal anesthesia then the woman is awake throughout the procedure and she will be able to see her baby as soon as it is delivered.
