What Is Gestational Diabetes?

Some pregnant woman develops a condition known as gestational diabetes. The blood sugar of the patient is checked in between 24 to 28 weeks of the pregnancy. Most of the time, there are no symptoms present in the patient to suggest a diagnosis. If the blood sugar is high and it is diagnosed, the doctor will give a set of advise which should be carefully followed for a good pregnancy outcome. The problem usually disappears after the baby is born.

If the high sugar in the mother is not controlled then the baby can be affected adversely. The baby grows very large in size and there is an increased chance of having operative delivery. The baby may have very low sugar when it is born. Doctor advises the patient to go on a diabetic diet; restricting the calories and may also add an injection of insulin if the diabetic state persists.

The main reason for pregnancy related diabetes is the presence of hormones, which makes the insulin produced by the mother, not to act to its full potential. There is an insulin resistance in the mother which results in gestational diabetes.
