What Is Gestational Diabetes?
Some pregnant woman develops a condition known as gestational diabetes. The blood sugar of the patient is checked in between 24 to 28 weeks of the pregnancy. Most of the time, there are no symptoms present in the patient to suggest a diagnosis. If the blood sugar is high and it is diagnosed, the doctor will give a set of advise which should be carefully followed for a good pregnancy outcome. The problem usually disappears after the baby is born.
If the high sugar in the mother is not controlled then the baby can be affected adversely. The baby grows very large in size and there is an increased chance of having operative delivery. The baby may have very low sugar when it is born. Doctor advises the patient to go on a diabetic diet; restricting the calories and may also add an injection of insulin if the diabetic state persists.
The main reason for pregnancy related diabetes is the presence of hormones, which makes the insulin produced by the mother, not to act to its full potential. There is an insulin resistance in the mother which results in gestational diabetes.

What is Cesarean Section?
A cesarean section is delivery of the baby through the incision (cut) made in the mother’s abdomen (belly) and her womb. Cesarean delivery is done for many reasons. The operation is scheduled either on an elective (planned) basis or on an emergency basis (unplanned).
Planned cesarean section is done for multiple pregnancy abnormalities or presentation of the baby such as, the baby is lying crocked in the womb or it’s buttocks are presenting at the mouth of the womb, or there are more than one baby (twin pregnancy), or abnormal location of the placenta such as placenta previa where the placenta is present at the mouth of the womb, or the patient request for a cesarean section.
Unplanned or emergency cesarean is done for the problems arised during the labor. Some of the reasons are: the labor may be slow, baby becomes distressed, sudden bleeding due to the abnormal placental location or the placenta separates even before the delivery of the baby, or the baby is too big that it cannot negotiate through the birth canal.
Women are given a spinal or general anesthesia and the operation is carried out. If the Cesarean is done under spinal anesthesia then the woman is awake throughout the procedure and she will be able to see her baby as soon as it is delivered.

Miscarriage
A miscarriage is defined as losing the pregnancy before 20 weeks of pregnancy. Most of the pregnancies which are lost in the first trimester, are because of some abnormalities in the growing embryo. For the pregnant woman it may be hard to accept. She usually wonders about the cause and blames herself for the miscarriage.Almost one in 4 pregnancies are lost in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. Patient may suddenly develop crampy abdominal pain with fresh bleeding. She may see clots and pieces passing out from her vagina. As she passes out all the tissues, her crampy pain and bleeding stops. The condition is complete abortion. Sometimes, she may pass out the products of conception partially and may continue to bleed. This condition is termed as incomplete abortion; in that case, she has to see her doctor. If the doctor confirms the diagnosis, he will advise the patient to undergo evacuation of uterus to remove the left over pieces.
After a miscarriage, women wants to know the chances of having another miscarriage. The chances of having another miscarriage is almost the same as that of the first miscarriage. The chances of future successful pregnancies are good. If the woman keeps on having more than 3 miscarriages than the doctor does investigations to find out the reason and treats the problems accordingly.

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome
Pregnant women should avoid taking alcohol. Alcohol can harm the growing fetus and produce disfiguration and mental disability. Alcohol can pass from the mother’s blood to the baby’s blood through the placenta. Alcohol affects the brain and the spinal cord of the baby. The affect of alcohol on the fetus produces abnormal facial features. The baby is smaller than the other babies of the same age. Child develops learning disability. The child has behavioral problems. The child might also develop eye, ear, heart, and kidney problems.
The more the mother drinks, more will be the deleterious affect on her unborn baby. There is no minimal amount that can be taken without any adverse affect. Doctors advise their patients to stop drinking, even before trying the pregnancy. If you are addicted to alcohol, and you are pregnant, then you should talk to your doctor, get counseling, attend support groups and try to sort out your addiction before this harms your unborn baby.
